  1. HPL2VEN
  2. A Font Conversion Utility 
  3.  
  4. If you use Ventura Publisher you probably love everything about
  5. it. But, almost everyone I know wishes that they could add a few
  6. fonts to the list. If your in that group you'll be happy to know
  7. that most (but not all) fonts that are available for the HP
  8. Laserjet can be converted for use with Ventura. All the tools
  9. needed for the conversion are found on the utilities disk. The
  10. only problem is that the process of conversion is tedious and not
  11. very well documented. I played around with the conversion
  12. programs until I got reasonably adept at getting what I wanted.
  13. But converting more then a couple of fonts at a time was just not
  14. something to look forward to. Their had to be a better way.
  15. HPL2VEN is, at least for me, less frustrating and a lot faster. 
  16. A few words of caution before you begin. I wrote this little
  17. program for myself and can not guarantee that you will get
  18. acceptable results. I will accept no responsibility for any
  19. problems that you encounter. All I can say is that it works very
  20. well for me and I use it all the time.
  21. Because I wrote the program initially only for myself I decided
  22. to include very little error checking. If I were to get some
  23. favorable response I might be persuaded to polish things up a
  24. bit. but for now you will have to be very careful that what you
  25. type in at the prompts is what you meant. You will just have to
  26. break  out of the program, delete the files that the program
  27. created and start over. If you make a mistake but don't notice it
  28. the bat files that are created will run but may produce files
  29. that don't do what you had hoped for.
  30. The program makes use of color to keep the different prompts
  31. separated so that you can keep track of where you are in the
  32. program. If you don't have color this program may not work.
  33. The program works by taking your input and creating a .BAT file
  34. and a .LST file that utilize the programs from the utilities disk
  35. to convert the HP font files, create the font metric files for
  36. use in creating the width table and finally to create the width
  37. table.
  38. Step by step: 
  39. 1. Create a directory to work from.
  40. 2. Copy three files from the Ventura utilities disk.
  41.    a) HPLTOFNT.EXE
  42.    b) HPLTOVFM.EXE
  43.    c) VFMTOWID.EXE  
  44. 3. Copy the fonts that you wish to convert to the new directory.
  45. 4. Copy HPL2VEN.COM to the new directory.
  46. 5. Type HPL2VEN <CR> and follow the prompts.
  47. 6. Run the batch file that HPL2VEN created.
  48. Depending on how many and how large the files are that you are
  49. converting, the batch file may take quite a while to complete. If
  50. all goes well you should end up with one new width file and new
  51. font and font metric files for each of the fonts that you
  52. converted.   
  53. You then copy the width table and the font files to the VENTURA
  54. directory. The font metric files (VFM) are not needed but you may
  55. wish to keep them with your back-ups. 
  56. The next step is to test the font by outputing something to see
  57. if the new fonts work. Be sure to change the width table in the
  58. SET PRINTER INFO dialogue box. If everything looks right on the
  59. screen and prints out right, then you can merge the new width
  60. table with the default table. 
  61. Sometimes, and I don't know why, a new font will look very
  62. strange on the screen but print out fine. If this happens make a
  63. back-up of your default OUTPUT.WID table and try merging the new
  64. one anyway. Sometimes this solves the screen problem. When the
  65. program asks for font type you may have to go to the Ventura
  66. manual (k. 15) to look up the code. This seems to have something
  67. to do with which screen face is used.    
  68. Expect to do some experimentation before you get things right.
  69. Try converting just one font first. When you are sure that one
  70. works the rest will probably go much easier.
  71. My personal set up includes the Tall Tree Jlaser Plus board and a
  72. Canon LBP-2A laser printer. I don't have access to other printers
  73. so I can only assume that this procedure will work with other
  74. printers. 
  75. Remember, always work with back-ups. Keep all your conversion
  76. files in a directory to themselves and proceed with caution. 
  77. Since this is the very first version of this program, I am not
  78. going to beg for the usual donations but I would appreciate any
